Oil & Natural Gas

Wood Pellet BoilersWhat it is:

These are the two most common means of space heating in the US. Fuel is burned either in a boiler or a furnace. Boilers deliver heat via hot water or steam through radiators. Furnaces use fans to force hot air through ducts.

Past, present, future

These two means of heating came into being because of several key reasons: they contain a lot of energy, they were plentiful, they were low cost, and they were convenient. They’re still convenient, but they are depleting at a rapid rate, and their costs are rising. The fact that they are polluting was not so apparent when the world economy was smaller, and as heating appliances became more efficient. Now it is clear that transforming the billions of tons of carbon stored underground for hundreds of millions of years into CO2, in a short geological time span is seriously affecting the ecology cycles of the planet.

Advantages:

  • Convenient
  • Readily available
  • Energy-intensive

Disadvantages:

  • Depleting (non-renewable)
  • Increasingly expensive
  • Unlocks carbon.

Ecological Impacts

  • Major factor in the climate crisis/global warming

EcoHeat Quick Fact:

The quantity of imported oil began to surpass domestically produced oil in the mid-nineties, as long-term trends in US oil demand continued to increase and domestic production continued to decline.
